Typhoon Ampil is disrupting Shinkansen bullet train lines and other railway services in Japan. The storm is bearing down on the eastern part of the main Japanese island of Honshu.

The Central Japan Railway Company, JR Central, has canceled all services on the Tokaido Shinkansen line between Tokyo and Nagoya for the entire day on Friday.

Services between Nagoya and Shin-Osaka have been reduced. Reservations are only being accepted for the first-class Green cars. The company has also canceled services that directly connect the Tokaido Shinkansen line to the Sanyo Shinkansen line.

The firm says there is a possibility that there will be service suspensions and delays on Saturday, depending on the progress of equipment inspections.

The East Japan Railway Company, JR East, has decided to cancel some services on the Tohoku, Jo-etsu and Yamagata Shinkansen lines from around 11 a.m.

The company says services on the Hokuriku and Akita Shinkansen lines may also be disrupted by the storm.

As for air travel, All Nippon Airways says 335 domestic and international flights at Haneda and Narita Airports will be grounded on Friday.

Japan Airlines says it will cancel 319 flights.

The airlines are asking travelers to check the status of flights online or by other means.
