UK partially suspends arms exports to Israel

Britain has partially suspended arms exports to Israel. It cited as a reason the clear risk that the items might be used to commit violations of international humanitarian law.

The British government said on Monday that it will immediately suspend around 30 export licenses for items used in Gaza, out of roughly 350 arms export licenses to Israel.

The Labour Party-led government launched a review of Israel's use of arms when it assumed office in July.

Under the export licensing criteria that Britain has established, the government will not issue export licenses, if the items may be used to commit or facilitate serious violations of international humanitarian law.
The suspension covers key components of fighter aircraft, helicopters and drones, as well as items that facilitate ground targeting.

British media outlets say British arms exports amount to around one percent of all the arms that Israel receives.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the export suspension will not have a material impact on Israel's security.

He said, "The UK continues to support Israel's right to self-defence in accordance with international law."
