Negotiations for Gaza ceasefire face challenges
Negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip are facing difficulties as Israel and the Islamic group Hamas remain apart on issues including the extent of Israel's military presence.
Israel and Hamas are continuing working-level talks in Egypt, which is mediating the negotiations. The talks are likely focusing on the conditions for the release of hostages and the extent of the Israeli troops' withdrawal from Gaza.
But a significant gap remains between Israel, which insists on maintaining its troops in areas like the southern border with Egypt even after a ceasefire, and Hamas, which strongly opposes this.
A senior Hamas member said on Monday that the group will not accept the conditions that Israel has added to the previous proposal.
The Israeli military continued to attack Gaza on Tuesday. Palestinian media reported that a total of 21 people died in Gaza City in the north, Khan Younis in the south and other places.
Footage taken on Tuesday morning by a videographer at NHK's Gaza office showed wounded people, including children, being taken to hospital.
Health authorities in the Gaza Strip said the death toll in the conflict had reached 40,476.
United Nations officials evacuated from their operations center in central Gaza's Deir al-Balah after the Israeli military issued an evacuation order to residents there.
The UN said it was forced to halt preparations for vaccinations and other activities. In Gaza, health officials have confirmed the first case of polio in 25 years.
