Hostage's mother appeals to Israel, Hamas to reach deal to end suffering in Gaza
An Israeli woman whose son has been taken hostage by Hamas has called on the leaders of both sides to reach a compromise to achieve the release of hostages and stop the suffering of innocent people in Gaza.
Negotiations are continuing for a ceasefire and hostage-release deal. But the talks have seen little progress due to wide differences between Israel and the Islamic group.
Rachel Goldberg-Polin spoke to NHK in Jerusalem on Wednesday. Her son, Hersh, is being held hostage by Hamas.
Goldberg-Polin said, "What we would like to see is a deal that brings home these remaining 108 very diverse hostages and stops the horrible suffering to the innocent people in Gaza."
On the stalled talks, she said, "We can't be pessimistic and we can't lose hope." She said, "We are praying that the two men who are in power on both sides, do the right thing for their people and to stop the suffering of the innocent." She suggested compromise is necessary, saying, "Nobody likes to compromise, but that is part of doing the right thing."
She said she began folding paper cranes earlier this month in the hope of realizing the release of the hostages. Paper cranes are widely regarded as a symbol of hope for peace after a young atomic bomb victim in Hiroshima made a large number of them to pray for her recovery.
Goldberg-Polin expressed her gratitude to Japanese people for sending messages of love and support via social media.
