  • Canada to raise tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles

The Canadian government has decided to add a tariff of 100 percent on imports of electric vehicles from China. The decision comes on the heels of similar moves by other Western countries.

Canada has already applied a tariff of more than 6 percent on imports of Chinese electric vehicles. On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau outlined plans to increase that.

Trudeau said, "Actors like China have chosen to give themselves an unfair advantage in the global marketplace, compromising the security of our critical, critical industries and displacing dedicated Canadian auto- and metalworkers."

Trudeau also announced a 25 percent tariff on imported steel and aluminum from China. The measures will take effect in October.

The European Union plans to add tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles of up to 36.3 percent. In May, the US introduced a tax of 100 percent. Officials in Washington say Chinese subsidies have eliminated a "level playing field."
