Paris celebrates 80th anniversary of liberation from German occupation
A ceremony was held in Paris on Sunday to celebrate the 80th anniversary of its liberation from Nazi Germany during World War Two.
French President Emmanuel Macron gave a speech at the commemoration ceremony, referencing the phrase "Is Paris burning?" reportedly spoken by Adolf Hitler when he ordered the city's destruction.
Macron said that Paris did not burn, and that 80 years later, all eyes are on the city, the host of the Olympics and Paralympics, during a summer of flames and joy.
Following his speech, representatives of residents brought the torch for the Paris Paralympics to the center of the square, prompting spectators and participants to applaud.
The torch will be relayed across France before being lit in a cauldron during the Paralympics opening ceremony on Wednesday.
