A shootout erupted between a gunman and police officers near the Israeli Consulate General in the southern German city of Munich on Thursday, resulting in the death of the man. Authorities say he may have planned a terror attack on the consulate.
Police say an 18-year-old Austrian national was shot dead after the exchange of fire. They say no one else was injured.
Thursday marked 52 years from a deadly attack by a Palestinian extremist group on the Israeli delegation during the 1972 Munich Olympics. Eleven people were killed.
Prosecutors and police said in a joint statement that they assumed Thursday's incident to be an attempted terrorist attack with reference to the consulate. They are investigating to clarify the motives and other details.
Local media reports say Austrian authorities had previously searched the teenager's home on suspicion of being under the influence of radical Islamist ideas.
German authorities have been on high alert since the fatal stabbing of three people at an event in late August, for which the Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility.
