Survivors of a massive earthquake in Morocco remain in poor living conditions in shelters a year aft
Survivors of a massive earthquake in Morocco remain in poor living conditions in shelters a year after the disaster. Aid workers are calling for continued international support.
The magnitude 6.8 quake struck a mountainous area in central Morocco on September 8 of last year. The Moroccan government says more than 2,900 people were killed and over 55,000 buildings were damaged.
But officials say so far only 1,000 housing buildings have been rebuilt. Footage taken earlier this month shows a slope lined with a number of makeshift shelters, such as tents.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, or IFRC, and people from the region say reconstruction is making slow progress, due to poor accessibility to some areas and a shortage of funds. They say the survivors are enduring severe heat and heavy rain in the outdoor conditions.
The local representative of the IFRC said some survivors feel the world has forgotten about them, as the conflict in Gaza drew global attention right after the Morocco quake. The representative asked the international society to remember them, saying it is taking a long time for them to return to normal life.
