Honmaru Palace of Nijo

The Honmaru-goten Palace of the World Heritage site Nijo-jo Castle in Kyoto has reopened to the public for the first time in 18 years after quake-resistance reinforcement work was completed.

Nijo-jo Castle was initially built in 1603 in the beginning of the Tokugawa shogunate era. The current Honmaru Palace in the castle was moved from Katsura-no-miya Palace near the Kyoto Imperial Palace in 1894. It is designated as a national important cultural asset.

The work to improve the palace's quake resistance began in 2017, and was completed by the end of March this year.

At the reopening, visitors were drawn to the gold leafs adorning the interior of one of the palace's buildings, Goshoin, where important guests were greeted.

Visitors also raved about the more than 230 paintings decorated on the palace's walls and sliding partitions, which were painted by artists who gained prominence in Kyoto during the late Edo period.

A local resident in his 20s said that he made a reservation a month before as he had wanted to look inside the palace. The man said that he was impressed by the paintings and their historical importance.

Visitors are required to make bookings in advance on Nijo-jo Castle's website or other places to join a group tour of about 15 people to go inside the palace.
